Dentistry

What is Dentistry?

Dentistry is the area of dentistry dedicated to the treatment of tooth lesions through the restoration of teeth with cavities, changes in shape or colour, and the resolution of dental fractures.

Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry uses resin materials called composites that adhere to the teeth, allowing them to recover their original appearance, giving the patient back a healthy and beautiful smile, thus contributing to improved aesthetics, self-confidence and social involvement.

At Instituto Dentário Alto dos Moinhos we have a team of specialists in Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry who use the most advanced techniques and various high-quality materials, adapting to each clinical case in order to restore the tooth’s functional characteristics and a natural appearance and texture.

Restoration of teeth with caries lesions

Caused by bacteria, tooth decay is the disease that most often affects the oral cavity.

It develops mainly in the fissures of the occlusal surfaces of the back teeth and on the surfaces between the teeth.

Composite resins are currently the aesthetic material of choice for restoring lost tooth structure, directly and in a single session.

Tooth fractures, gaps between teeth (diastemas) and shape changes

In this type of treatment, the dentist uses composite resins – composites – with high mechanical and aesthetic performance to reconstruct fractured teeth, correct the shape of non-harmonious teeth (teeth that are too small or conical in shape) and correct or reduce the spacing between teeth (diastemas).

These situations can be treated in two ways: direct composite resin restorations or indirect ceramic restorations – veneers. In other cases, orthodontic intervention may also be necessary, and multidisciplinary cases are assessed by the various areas of dentistry.

Inlays / Onlays / Overlays

Indirect dental reconstructions are made in a dental laboratory and cemented onto the tooth, restoring the affected surface.

Indirect restorations are usually made of composite or ceramic, perfectly mimicking the colour and structure of the missing tooth.

These types of restorations are usually indicated for posterior teeth (molars and premolars) that have large cavities or fractures, which are very weakened and drastically reduced in strength.

Faq

Unfortunately, some cavities develop without showing any symptoms. However, there are some signs and symptoms that can indicate the existence of caries lesions, such as sensitivity to cold or hot foods and drinks, toothache, a change in the placement of the tooth, and the existence of a cavity in the dental piece.

In exactly the same way as natural dentition, rigorous and effective daily oral hygiene must be carried out, accompanied by regular visits to the dentist so that the condition of the restorations can be clinically reassessed.

The stresses to which restorations are continually subjected by the forces of chewing can cause wear, cracks and fractures. When a restoration is compromised, it will always need to be repaired or completely replaced.

Replacing an amalgam restoration with an aesthetic material, such as composite resins, should only be done if the restoration has problems (fractures or evidence of caries recurrence underneath).

When the restoration is in good condition, it can only be removed if the patient’s aesthetic needs require it.
